Today the Maxtor Corporation has announced the next generation of World's Most Popular Hard Drive Interface, the Ultra ATA/133. The new interface will boost data transfer rates between the computer and the hard drive up to 133 megabytes(MB) per second. Check out the press release here.

Good news:

-Boosts transfer rates to 133 MB burst rate with existing ribbon cable technology
-Via and SiS are signed on to produce southbridge components in compliance with this standard

Bad news:

-Intel makes close to 60% of the chipsets shipped (Via and others hover between 30 and 40%) and want nothing to do with ATA-133
-Serial ATA, a spec that has most geeks excited at the prospect of inexpensive SCSI-like performance and thin-cabled overclocking goodness, will release products late this year or early 2002.

Will Intel be able to integrate Serial ATA into their southbridges before Via/SiS can integrate ATA-133 into theirs? Maybe not. Will their be broad industry support for ATA-133? Maybe. Maxtor make a lot of hard drives.

The big question is: What is the cost for the consumer? Will ATA-133 be the stake through the heart of SCSI (Doubtful)? Will Serial-ATA be cheaper and faster than Firewire (Possibly)? Will consumers want to spend the money to upgrade to either of these technologies immediately or will it be a slow process?
