Graphics Because the original PSX game was rendered in full-3D, it does not suffer the same problems like other console
ports such as Final Fantasy VII which were a mix of 3D and 2D backgrounds. FFVII for the PC had murky and jagged 2D
backdrops, which seemed incongruent with the higher-res 3D characters. However, MGS still has some graphic deficiencies that
are obvious to the PC gamer who plays it at 1024x768 because the original graphics in the PSX game were
designed to play on low-res TV.
Also, on my P3 700MHz/ Voodoo5 5500 rig, the frames per second maxed out at 30fps (I used FRAPS
to measure the fps as this game runs with Direct3D). This is normal for most PSX to PC ports, and Tomb Raider PC games are another
prime example of games that won't run past 30fps.
Nevertheless, the game still looks gorgeous (especially with 4xFSAA on), and the mood and atmosphere created by
the in-game environments are second to none. This game was the pinnacle of graphic achievement on the PSX, and
the quality shows.
Sound
The voice acting in MGS is some of the best ever for a translated video game. Also, playing MGS with my four-point
surround sound computer speakers and sub-woofer sounded way better than on my TV. The music for the game is
appropriate and adds to the atmosphere.
