The Product
The RumbleFX is a very unique product. Unlike with your traditional
headphones which only allow you to listen to music, the RumbleFX
allows you to feel the music. This new technology produced by Evergreen
Technologies adds a sense of realism to games as well as music,
movies, etc., instead of simply hearing sounds you can now feel
them.
The RumbleFX works by use of a DSP which picks up the low frequencies
in music which are often missed by traditional headphones. The headphones
then transform these low signals into vibrations which the user
experiences, adding a new sense of realism to pretty much everything.
What makes the RumbleFX even more fabulous is that it is compatible
with any device that has a standard headphone output jack. Since
everything is built into the headphone, so there is no need to install
drivers or have special software. A truly plug and play solution.
The RumbleFX also features a control unit attached between the
headphone jack and headphones, which features adjustment for the
volume as well as the vibrations setting of the headphone. The vibration
is controlled by a 3-position switch: off, level I, and level II.
Setting the switch to Level I provides a moderate rumble while level
II provides the full-blown rumbling experience.
The headphones themselves are very well designed. They feature
padded earpieces, which fit very comfortably around the entire ear.
Contrary to what you might think, the headphones are not that heavy.
Although not as light as some headphones, I found them to overall
be a lot more comfortable than most headphones.
Testing
I tested the RumbleFX on several devices: CD player, television,
and PC.
CD Player:
The RumbleFX worked great when used in conjunction with a CD Player.
I found the sound quality to very good. Songs that had a lot of
bass produced a very rumbling experience. Some songs I had to actually
turn the effect level down on after I saw portions of my brain on
the floor. (Note: Joke) For a comparison I used the Plantronics
DSP-500, a $139.00 set of headphones. I found that overall the RumbleFX
provided a better quality of sound and bass than the Plantronics
DSP-500.
Television:
The TV I have features a headphone output jack on the front of it
so I though what better place to test out the headphones than on
movies and TV shows. I found that the RumbleFX only worked well
when watching music videos, action movies, thrillers, etc. Normal
sitcoms and TV shows don't have a lot of low frequencies to provide
the RumbleFX with something to work with.
PC - Gaming:
This was truly where the RumbleFX shined for me. Being a FPS fanatic
the RumbleFX provided a great affect in all the games I tested like
Counterstrike, Unreal, Operation Flashpoint, and Quake III. Games
that incorporated EAX or A3D were even more amazing. Not only was
I provided with positional audio but a sense of actual feeling.
I also found that using the RumbleFX gave me an advantage over my
opponents. For example, in Counterstrike, whenever an opponent shot,
I was able to easily determine from which direction the shot was
coming from.
